Wikileaks founder Julian Assange nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Julian Assange, founder of the whistle blowing website, Wikileaks, has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by a member of the Norwegian government.

Snorre Valen, the MP who nominated Assange, revealed the nomination in his latest blog entry.

"Liu Xiabao was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year for his struggle for human rights, democracy and freedom of speech in China, Likewise: WikiLeaks have contributed to the struggle for those very values globally, by exposing (among many other things) corruption, war crimes and torture."

As a rule, Nobel Peace Prize nominations are usually a closely kept secret, however it appears that Valen has ‘outed' Assange's vote.

The Nobel Peace Prize is an award that celebrates notable people who in some way aim to promote peace throughout the world, Techwatch reports.

The non-profit whistleblower website has been condemned by many in the U.S. government after it published hundreds of thousands of sensitive diplomatic and military cables late last year. The White House and State Department said the document dumps have harmed U.S. interests overseas.

Its founder, Julian Assange, is in Britain pending an extradition request from Sweden, where two women have accused him of rape, molestation and unlawful coercion. The 39-year-old Australian insists he is innocent and is fighting extradition, according to AOL News.
