US forces launched the military attack on Iraq

America launched the army operation against Iraq at 5:35 a.m. Moscow time. The war started an hour and a half later after the Bush’s ultimatum to the Iraqi leader expired.

Sirens started howling in the Iraqi capital, ABM systems of the country were activated. According to the information from the BBC, a White House spokesman released an official statement regarding the first stage of Iraq’s disarmament. American President George Bush appeared on the national television and delivered a speech to the American nation right after the army operation began. “A campaign on the harsh terrain of a nation as large as California could be longer and more difficult than some predict,” said George W. Bush in the address to his fellow citizens.

For the time being, it is not known, if the USA managed to destroy any targets as a result of first air strikes on Iraq. News agencies report that there can be puffs of smoke seen all over Baghdad. The city still has electric power supplies, which means that electric power plants are still operating.

A spokesman for the American administration stated to Associated Press news agency that the US forces launched a surgical military strike near Baghdad, after the American intelligence detected the possibility Iraqi leaders were staying in the area.

Various sources of information report that over 20 cities and towns in Iraq’s central and southern areas, including Basra, were exposed to bombing. Several missiles blew up in the southern suburb of the Iraqi capital too. Saddam Hussein’s elder son Uday declared the holy war on America. Russian seismologists forecasted powerful earthquakes in the region as consequences of the American incursion in Iraq.
