Russian Bishop Holds Memorial Service In Beijing

Metropolitan Cyril, who came to China on a one-day visit, held a service in memory of all Orthodox Christians who died in this country. The service was held near the memorial cross in the Russian embassy in Beijing. Metropolitan Cyril said this day was "historic". It was the first time over half a century that 26 descendants of Albazinians took part in a service. Their forefathers were Cossacks who came to China from the Russian Far East in the 17th century, settling in the northeastern part of the Chinese capital and preserving their Orthodox faith. Later, a Russian spiritual mission was established in this area, also functioning as the Russian diplomatic mission for a long time. Nowadays the Russian embassy in the Chinese People's Republic is situated there. There are three families of Russian settlers' descendants who are currently Chinese citizens. The metropolitan is due to head from Beijing to Hong Kong and Vietnam, where he will also meet with counterparts, hold services, and take part in establishing a parish in Vung Tau. Metropolitan Cyril will also visit Cambodia and Thailand.
