A powerful earthquake has struck off the Solomon Islands but a monitoring agency said a tsunami was not expected. The US Geological Survey said the 7.1-magnitude quake hit south-west of the island chain's Kira Kira island in the South Pacific.
The quake's epicentre was about 130 miles south-east of the capital Honiara, The Press Association reported.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) officials, local media outlets have learned that some people in a remote tribal village in the Solomon Islands' Isabel Province were injured, but that the damage there was not severe.
The Solomon Islands, which is located in the South pacific Ocean east of Papua New Guinea, consists of nearly 1,000 islands. It covers a land mass of 27,986 square kilometers. The capital, Honiara, is on the island of Guadalcanal, Focus Taiwan News Channel says.
