Italy's Francesca Schiavone produced her second surprise win of the Kremlin Cup on Friday, eliminating eighth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Schiavone, who routed second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo on Thursday, broke once in the first set and twice in the second to beat the former U.S. Open champion in 55 minutes. The Italian has never won a tournament on the WTA Tour.
Also in the dual ATP and WTA tournament, third-seeded Mary Pierce of France rallied from 0-6 down in a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Russia's Elena Likhovtseva 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (6) in 193 minutes.
Top-seeded Maria Sharapova was to play fellow Russian Dinara Safina in a quarterfinal later Friday.
