Lessons of chess as an optional syllabus can become a component of school curricula already in the near future, said world champion Anatoli Karpov who arrived in Krasnoyarsk (an administrative centre in Siberia) to participate in the ceremony of closing the 56th chess championship of Russia among men.
In his opinion, the Ministry of Education will soon take a respective decision to this effect. The world champion confirmed his forecast by saying that the Russian chess federation has recently been working "with an eye to developing children's and youth chess in full accord with the country's Ministry of Education and the education departments of many regions".
Karpov also stressed that "chess can unobtrusively teach many things", for instance, control of time, analysis, planning, forecasting and self-discipline.
