In both cases, the perpetrators carried out the attacks because they believed that having sexual relations with a virgin would cure them of AIDS. Apart from having a great chance of becoming HIV positive, both girls suffered horrendous internal injuries in the attacks.
The Portuguese doctor Joao Branco da Fonseca, at Baragwanath Hospital, Johannesburg, stated that more than half of pregnant girls who are treated at the hospital are HIV positive.
AIDS is reaching the levels of a national catastrophe in South Africa. The problem is compounded with a traditional lack of respect for women’s rights and a growing phenomenon of sexual violence against minors, even babies, as it is believed that sexual relations with a virgin “washes” the AIDS virus.
