US Ordered to Halt Executions by World Court

The World Court has ordered the United States of America to stay the executions of three Mexican citizens until allegations that the correct legal procedure was not followed can be investigated. The court’s 15 judges voted for the motion unanimously.

The three Mexicans are among 51 held on death row in the USA. Mexico had presented a complaint against the United States, claiming that the proper legal procedure had not been followed, namely that the men were denied access to Mexican consular officials, a practice which upon investigation transpires to have taken place in no less than ten states, against the terms of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

The United States authorities complained against the appeal by the Mexican authorities, stating that it constituted “a sweeping prohibition of capital punishment of Mexican nationals in the United States regardless of US law”.

The Court’s decision is binding.
