A criminal case has been filed against a female resident of Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkov. The woman was starving out her two children – a five-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy.

The woman, who produces an impression of a respectable individual, is likely to be deprived of her parental rights. If convicted, the woman will spend up to five years in jail, the Kiev-based Facts and Commentaries newspaper wrote.

The two exhausted children are now staying at a local orphanage. Their mother was begging court officers not to take the kids away from her promising that she would become a better parent.

The five-year-old girl, named as Vlada, and her two-year-old brother, Kamil, were used to be staying at home for many days without going outside. When the girl finally managed to run outside, she started screaming to attract other people’s attention. The five-year-old girl has not learnt how to speak.

The little boy, Kamil, was seriously suffering from undernourishment. The boy could not stand up on his feet – he did not have enough strength to do it. The two children were slowly dying of hunger. It all was happening in the very center of the city, not somewhere in a godforsaken village.

Police officers are still shocked with what they saw at the single mother’s apartment.

“A good-looking woman went out of her flat and locked the door very quickly. However, we saw a child knocking on the windowpane, so we decided to see what was happening there inside,” an officer said.

“As soon as the door opened, a little girl came out running. She started eating grass on the lawn. We were standing there flabbergasted, but when we entered the apartment, we became speechless. Just try to image: there is garbage in the flat everywhere you look, the wallpapers are dirty and greasy, the potty is all black with dirt. The little boy was lying in the broken crib. He had his eyes wide open, his legs were thin, covered with wrinkled skin. He was all smeared with faeces, big flies were flying everywhere,” a female officer said.

“It’s hard to communicate with Vlada at the moment. The girl only smiles back and repeats the words that we tell her, which is a positive sign, though. She has recently learned how to answer “What’s your name?” question,” Vera Selivanova, a teacher at the orphanage said.

The woman added that the girl was eating a lot after she had found herself in the orphanage.

“She would empty her plate in two minutes. Now she likes to play with other kids – she adores playing with toys,” the teacher said.

Vlada’s brother, Kamil, is still at hospital. However, doctors say that the boy has been recovering quickly.

“The two-year-old boy weighed only two kilos when he arrived. He had rachitis, he could not even sit. Now the baby boy is putting on weight,” a doctor said.

A neighbor of the cruel mother said that the woman was not sociable at all.

“She would never talk to anyone. She would never ask anyone drop by for a cup of tea or something. The only person in the house that she talked to was my husband – she asked him to fix the wiring in her flat,” neighbor Valentina said.

The woman also said that the mother of the two children would always go out looking good.

“She would always take care of herself – wear nice clothes, have nice nails and a good hairstyle. I am not 100 percent sure, but it seems to me that she was a prostitute,” the woman said.
