Britney Spears prepares triumphant comeback with magic show on MTV Awards

Troubled pop princess Britney Spears will make her long-awaited return to the stage on Sunday when she performs her new single “Gimme More” at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Spears will open the awards show in Las Vegas and promoters are hopeful that her latest song, released on the web last week, will help resurrect her career after a tumultuous year for the 25-year-old mother-of-two.

The fallen pop star has been a frequent fixture in the tabloids of late due to her bitter custody battle with husband Kevin Federline and her increasingly erratic behaviour, culminating in several spells in rehab.

In an eventful year Spears has also found the time to shave off all her hair, serve legal papers against her mother, and have her parenting skills questioned by social workers.

Spears' new song was produced by hip producer Timbaland’s protégé Danja, and opens with the line “It’s Britney, bitch!”

According to MTV, the track will feature on an album set for release in the US on November 13.

The announcement that Britney will perform at the awards show comes after weeks of speculation, telegraph.co.uk reports.

Spears is a VMA veteran. She covered the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" in 2000, stripping down to a nude-coloured bikini top and matching pants.

A year later, she performed "I'm A Slave 4 U" with a two-metre albino python around her neck. In 2003, she and Madonna had the watercooler moment of the year with an open-mouth kiss - in the opening act.

Sunday's show in Las Vegas will mark Spears' latest - and biggest - step toward a career comeback after a period of public misbehaviour, short-lived marriages, ultra-short hair-don'ts and other misadventures.

Her long-awaited new album is due for release Nov. 13 on Jive Records, the AP reports.

Expectations are ridiculously high, but we have no doubt that Spears will once again deliver the goods. After all, she's already given us soooo many certifiably showstopping moments, which we've cobbled together below in a humble homage to the VMA's unquestioned mistress of ceremonies, MTV.com reports.
