Prime Minister of Japan to Fulfil Agreements with Russia

Prime Minister of Japan Junichiro Koizumi intends to fulfil the agreements with Russia achieved during his visit to Moscow last January, said Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov after his meeting with Koizumi in Tokyo.

The Japanese Prime Minister "intends to fulfil the plan of action in different spheres of relations with Russia, in the economic and energy spheres and, of course, in defence and security", Ivanov said.

During Koizumi's visit to Moscow in January 2003 the Russian and Japanese leaders adopted a 6-section plan of action, with each section summing up the results of bilateral relations in key spheres and outlining ways for future cooperation.

Thus, the document pointed to the two countries' readiness to carry out bilateral military exchanges via regular high-level visits, as well as consultations involving their defence ministries' representatives, mutual visits of battle ships and organisation of joint exercises on search and rescue at sea. Moreover, it underlined the aspiration to cooperate intensively in order to counteract threats from international terrorism and international organised crime.
