The Dagestani town of Khasavyurt has hosted the largest anti-war rally since the beginning of the US aggression in Iraq. The action gathered more than 20,000 citizens of Dagestan, a Russian federal republic on the Caspian coast that is mostly inhabited by Moslems.
Sanctioned by the local administration, the rally was held on the initiative of public organisations, Moslem leaders, the Russian Orthodox Church, and the local Jewish community.
Saigidpasha Umakhanov, the head of the local administration, announced that the residents of Khasavyurt were joining the rest of Dagestan to support Russia's position on the Iraqi problem solution within the framework of the United Nations.
