World Bank Hopes For The Earliest Formation Of A New Government In Georgia

The World Bank hopes that the recent events in Georgia will contribute to the formation in the country of a more consolidated and efficient government which, supported by the parliament, will be able to solve serious economic problems, says the statement issued by the World Bank's Georgian office, which was received by RIA Novosti. Commenting on the current visit to Georgia by the World Bank's director for the South Caucasian office Judy O'Conner, the statement of the office points out that at the negotiations in Tbilisi the sides are discussing the draft strategy of rendering aid to Georgia by the World Bank for the next three years. Apart from that, they are considering the plan of measures to contribute to the better fulfilment of the Programme for Reducing Poverty and Achieving Economic Growth which is being worked out by the Georgian government. The document says that Judy O'Conner had a chance to meet Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze to discuss the issues of the further cooperation between the World Bank and Georgia. During this conversation, it was pointed out that the country had come across serious economic problems - poverty, the energy crisis, corruption and the insufficient execution of the revenue part of the budget. "All this prevents the government from ensuring support of the poor," says the statement of the World Bank's office. The World Bank expects the earliest formation of a new government in Georgia and is ready to actively cooperate with it in the future," says the statement of the World Bank.
