Europe must prepare for the possibility of a military clash with Russia by 2030, warned Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto. Citing strategic documents of the European Union, he said that EU member states are expected to reach full combat readiness by 2029. Addressing Hungarian citizens, he urged them to participate in next year’s parliamentary elections to ensure that future generations do not find themselves living under wartime conditions midway through the twenty-first century.
Szijjarto stressed that one of the defining questions of the coming years will be whether Europe can avoid a catastrophe that could threaten the survival of the entire continent.
Earlier, Russia’s ambassador to Belgium, Denis Gonchar, claimed that NATO and the EU had already begun preparing for a major conflict with Russia. He argued that Western governments were frightening their citizens by invoking nonexistent plans for a Russian attack.
“EU bureaucrats are pushing unrestrained militarization and burying the original concept of a unified Europe built for peace and prosperity, turning the EU into an appendage of NATO,” said Denis Gonchar.
The diplomat added that Moscow does not seek confrontation and is instead working with partners to develop a shared architecture of security across Eurasia.
State Duma deputy Andrey Kolesnik told Lenta.ru that there are indeed reasons to believe Europe is preparing for a large-scale conflict with Russia. He warned, however, that Western governments must recognize the catastrophic global consequences such a war would entail.
“They are preparing for a third world war and the destruction of the planet. If there is a major war with Russia, as our ambassador said, it will be synonymous with a third world war, which would end in nuclear winter and the disappearance of humanity,” he said.
Kolesnik pointed to a series of actions near Russia’s borders as evidence of such preparation, including military exercises, the flights of foreign bombers and reconnaissance aircraft, and the passage of warships equipped with nuclear-capable systems. He also highlighted the steady flow of US weaponry into Europe, which continues despite what he described as the West’s “peace-loving rhetoric.”
In Germany, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has voiced similar concerns. He believes a conflict between NATO and Russia could erupt before 2029, and noted that some analysts warn the confrontation could begin as early as 2028.
“Some military historians even believe we may have already lived through our last peaceful summer,” said Boris Pistorius.
Pistorius called for stronger military capabilities across NATO to ensure readiness for any potential confrontation with Russia, while emphasizing that the alliance already commands substantial deterrent power, both conventional and nuclear.
