On Tuesday, the Pentagon released a report about cases of sexual crimes in the U.S. Army. According to statistics, in 2012, there were 26,000 various crimes committed, including rape, in the U.S. Army. Only 3,374 of such crimes were registered officially, Reuters said.
In addition, the report showed an increase of 35 percent in the number of cases of sex crimes that have not been exposed to the general public over the past two years. The general list of such crimes has increased by 37 percent over the past year, Reuters reports.
Meanwhile, the day before the publication of the report, another similar incident occurred in the United States. An officer, who heads the Department for the Prevention of Sexual Assault in the U.S. Air Force, was arrested for attempted rape. Officials with the Obama administration have already expressed their outrage about the situation.
U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that the problem of sex crimes in the U.S. Army had reached the scale that casts serious doubts on the possibility to attract and new people to the army.
