New Yorkers get 25 percent fatter despite Bloomberg's efforts

Despite the measures taken by New York City mayor to combat obesity with the help of decrees restricting the consumption of sugary drinks and fast food, the obesity rate in the city has increased by 25 percent, reports the NY Post.

According to the Department of Health, the obesity rate among adults has increased by the above-mentioned amount during Bloomberg's stay in the office - since 2002, that is. Thus, every 4th resident of the city suffers from obesity.

Contrary to these reports, New Yorkers are making progress on other health indicators. For example, the number of adults, who drink one or more servings of sugary drinks every day, dropped to 28 percent last year, despite the fact that in 2007 the figure was 36 percent.

In March, Bloomberg tried to fight obesity in the city by introducing the law to ban the sale of sodas in containers larger than 0.48 liters, although the law was not passed.
