Surgery complications may have caused Donda West's death

Donda West, the mother of rapper Kanye West, may have died of complications during a surgery at a Southern California hospital.

An autopsy was expected to be conducted by Wednesday, coroner's Lt. Fred Corral told The Associated Press. Preliminary information from officials at Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center, where West died Saturday, indicated she died from "complications of surgery," Corral said.

Messages left with representatives for West and her son were not returned.

West, who died at age 58, was known for the strong bond she shared with her son, and was often seen at his side at parties and award shows.

Kanye West, 30, often spoke of his close relationship with his mother, who raised him alone after her husband left when Kanye was 3.
