The State Tretiakov Gallery celebrated its 110th anniversary on August 15. This was announced to a Rosbalt correspondent by the press office of the Moscow administration. The gallery was founded on the vast private collection of Pavel Tretiakov, a local merchant and art collector. In 1892 Mr Tretiakov presented his collection as a gift to the city of Moscow. At that time the collection consisted of 1,287 landscape paintings, 518 sketches and 9 sculptures by Russian artists including Vasily Surikov, Alexander Ivanov, Ilya Repin, Konstantin Korovin and Vasily Perov.
One significant recent event in the history of the gallery was the purchase of Karl Briullov's View of Fort Pico in Madeira. The painting is one of the few landscapes painted by the artist.
