Volcano experts meet in Kamchatka

The International Association of Volcanology and the Chemistry of the Earth's Interior has organised a conference in Kamchatka, a peninsula in the north-east of Russia's Asian part.

The Institute of Volcanic Geology and Geochemistry of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported, the conference-cum-expedition is attended by scientists from Russia (Moscow, Novosibirsk, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky), Great Britain and Israel. The conference is devoted to the problem of studying the mechanism of explosive eruptions.

The reports and their discussion will be followed by a scientific tour to the Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanoes, slated for August 20-22.

The conference is attended by Steve Sparks (Britain) who headed the Association in 1999-2003 and by the current president of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior, Oded Navon (Israel).

Kamchatka attracts volcano experts from all over the world with its numerous active volcanoes with different types of eruptions.

At the present time, out of the 28 active volcanoes on the peninsula, three (Klyuchevskoi, Karymsky and Shiveluch) are at the stage of eruption.
