"Painters of American West. 1830-1940" exhibition opens in Moscow

The history of discovering new lands in the US West and the process of the nation's formation are the central motives of the exhibition titled "Painters of American West. 1830-1940" that opens on Wednesday in the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.

In Moscow the exhibits have been brought from St.Petersburg where the unknown for Russians layer of American culture was demonstrated in the Russian museum. The exhibition contains over 60 pieces of painting, sculpture and photography. Portraits and epic scenes showing the difficult relations between the native population of the West and newcomers from the East are exhibited along with idyllic landscapes depicting the primeval and magnificent nature of the continent.

The organizers of the exhibition are the Joslyn Art Museum /Omaha, Nebraska/ and the International Art and Education Fund /Bethesda, Maryland/. The exhibits were taken from different museums and private collections, including the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Stark Museum of Art /Texas/, the Gilcrease Museum /Oklahoma/, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, the Santa Fe Art Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The Moscow visitors will see works by George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frederic Remington and a number of their fellow countrymen the USA is proud of.
