Mariinsky Theatre gives final guest performance at Metropolitan Opera in New York

The opera-singing entourage of the Mariinsky Theatre have given their final performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where they were performing from July 8-26. As a Rosbalt correspondent was informed by the Mariinsky Theatre press office, the Russian troupe performed a number of Russian operas during its stay in New York including such classics as Tchaikovsky's Yevgeni Onegin and Mussorgsky's Khovanschina as well as lesser known works such as Rubinstein's Demon and Prokofiev's Semyon Kotko. The only non-Russian opera in the troupe's repertoire was Verdi's opera Macbeth.

The Mariinsky Theatre received a great deal of press coverage. 'Gergiev and the Kirov orchestra whipped up a fine frenzy in the climactic moments without slighting the score's lyrical passages,' the Associated Press wrote about the opera Semyon Kotko, which was the first production to be shown at the Metropolitan Opera.
