The Russian automobile manufacturing plant GAZ has started shipping the first lot of cars to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry within the framework of a UN program. Some 300 Volga cars will be sent to the Persian Gulf as soon as the UN defines the port where they are to be delivered, the press service of the company told RBC. According to a contract signed with the participation of the UN and the Russian Foreign Ministry, GAZ is to supply 5,000 Volga cars to Iraq by the end of 2003 that are to be used as taxis in Baghdad. In April 2003, some 200 cars will be assembled.
