Airports around New Zealand were thrown into turmoil last weekend when the second largest airline in the country - QANTAS NEW ZEALAND - ceased its operations without warning. The airline, which has been in financial trouble for some time, quoted excessive landing fees demanded by the operators of New Zealand airports as the immediate cause of collapse. Despite its name, QANTAS NEW ZEALAND was not a subsidiary of the Australian airline QANTAS, but a franchise run by independent operators. Its demise is not expected to affect the Australian company, which remains highly profitable.
