Uzbekistan and Russia maintain stable direct contacts on the level of heads of states and corresponding departments as regards the situation in Afghanistan, said Vyacheslav Trubnikov, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, while speaking Thursday at a State Duma plenary session. According to the agreement with Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov, a special representative of the Russian Defense Ministry has been sent to Uzbekistan. Trubnikov said about the Uzbek-American agreement on the terms of the US troops' stay in Uzbekistan signed on October 8 that the Russian Foreign Ministry did not "regard as reasonable to negatively gauge the totally legitimate decision of the Republic of Uzbekistan leadership". According to him, this decision is not at odds with the commitments undertaken by Uzbekistan to the Russian Federation.
