In northern Russian town of Roslyakovo, the surfacing of the dock carrying what has remained of the Kursk nuclear submarine is in progress. The nuclear sub sunk in the Barents Sea 14 months ago. Today, the sub appeared above the surface of the water for the first time since the tragedy. First, the deck cabin with smashed bull’s eyes and the sub’s tail came into view. Currently, the sub’s entire upper deck is above the sea surface. Lieutenant Gleb lyachin, son of the submarine’s late Captain Gennadi Lyachin, was first to step onto the sub’s upper deck. He was followed by Procurator General Vladimir Ustinov, Navy Comander-in-Chief Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov, North Fleet Commander Vyacheslav Popov, and Military Procurator Deputy Yuri Yakovlev. They carried out a preliminary survey of the submarine’s hull. Having returned to Roslyakovo, Procurator General Ustinov said the 9th compartment has been surveyed. “What we’ve done may be called a “site examination,” said the procurator. Admiral Kuroyedov, in turn, said he walked down the deck to the 4th compartment. According to him, it was impossible to walk farther, because the bulk of the sub is still under the water. The whole of the sub will appear above the water later today, experts say. The sub’s draining is due to take place tomorrow.
