Father’s aides and son do not see eye to eye

George Bush Senior’s advisors speak out against a unilateral attack by the USA on Iraq, as pressure from world leaders grows for a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

The latest senior figure from George Bush Senior’s administration to warn against a unilateral military strike on Iraq by US armed forces is former Secretary of State, James Baker, who claimed that such a venture would be dangerous politically and economically.

James Baker, it will be remembered, was the figure behind the skilful building of the international coalition against Iraq in the Gulf War, which saw armies from Arab countries fighting alongside the Americans, British and French. James Baker’s voice is added to the growing lists of heavyweights from the Bush Senior administration speaking out against a unilateral strike, after former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleberger, former National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft and General Norman Schwarzkopf, allied commander in chief during the Gulf War, launched attacks recently on the pro-strike camp, led by Vice President Richard (Dick) Cheney and Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
