Russian Doctors Perform Surgery Amid 8.7 Quake, Set for State Honors

Heroic Medics Operate Through Tremors as Kamchatka Quake Triggers Tsunamis

North Kurilsk on the Kuril Islands was struck by multiple tsunami waves following an 8.7-magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka—the region's most powerful seismic event since 1952. A second quake of magnitude 7.9 soon followed, prompting a state of emergency.

The epicenter was located 161 kilometers off the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of 32 kilometers. The quake’s sheer force triggered tsunami warnings as far as Japan and the United States.

Footage from the disaster area shows waves battering coastal infrastructure. According to Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko, the third tsunami wave was the most destructive. Despite the scale of the disaster, no casualties were reported on Sakhalin.

"We suspect damage to power and water systems, but cannot assess it fully until rescuers allow access to the town."

Valery Limarenko, Governor of Sakhalin Region

Drone footage captured scenes of devastation in North Kurilsk, including flooding of the fish processing plant. In total, 2,700 people were evacuated from the islands. A camp belonging to the Russian Geographical Society was washed away by the waves, though all individuals were rescued safely.

To minimize risk, authorities shortened the working day in all public institutions as tsunami threats remained active.

Surgeons Operate Through Quake, To Receive State Honors

In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, security footage revealed a surgical team continuing an operation at the Kamchatka Regional Oncology Center even as the ground shook violently. The quake struck in the middle of a procedure, but the doctors remained calm and focused on saving the patient.

"I’ve ordered documentation for state awards for the oncology center medics who never stopped operating during the strongest tremors. Their courage deserves the highest recognition."

Vladimir Solodov, Governor of Kamchatka Region

Governor Solodov praised the team’s "calmness and professionalism," describing their dedication as a powerful symbol of commitment to their work and fellow citizens during disaster.
