Moscow will soon have the new surface metro
Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov came to see the construction of the first line of the surface metro in Moscow. The line is expected to be completed by December of the next year.
The first line of the surface metro will link one of distant Moscow districts Yuzhnoye Butovo with a station of the traditional metro. This traditional station is not in operation yet either. Dmitry Donskoy Boulevard station is scheduled to be ready in December of this year. Dmitry Donskoy Blvd. will become the 164th station of the Moscow metro.
The main part of the new surface metro line will be built at the height of several meters above the ground. There are to be seven stations on the line. Specialists say that up to 25 thousand people per hour will be using the new metro daily. Moscow metro chief Dmitry Gaev advised that there would be another traditional metro station ready in May of 2003. This station will be called Park Pobedy (Victory Park), it will be the deepest metro station in Russia – 100 deep under the ground.
The Moscow government approved the program of metro construction on May 7 of the current year. The program is meant for the period up to the year 2015. The program stipulates for the construction of new metro lines and the completion of several new stations that are being built now. The volume of metro-building investments is evaluated in the sum of 137.8 billion rubles. This will not be that easy for the Moscow budget, though.
