Russia to buy license for production of Italian tanks

Russia may acquire the license from Italy for the production of Centauro tanks. The tests of those tanks are already underway in Russia.

The tanks in question are manufactured by CIO - the company established by Oto Melara and Iveco. Italy has 400 Centauro tanks in its armed forces. The maximum speed, which Centauro tanks can develop, may reach 100 km/h. In addition to the 120-mm gun, the tank is equipped with two 7,62-mm guns, Izvestia said.

A spokesman for Oto Melara said that the company may indeed sell the license for the production of Centauro tanks to Russia. Two Centauro tanks have already been delivered to Russia. The tanks arrived at the port of Novorossiisk and currently undergo tests in the Moscow region.

Dmitry Rogozin previously stated that Russia was planning to launch the serial production of new Armata tanks by 2015. At the end of April, Rogozin stated that Russia was going to start purchasing technologies from foreign countries rather than military hardware.
