Family sues 84-year-old driver over deadly crash into school

The parents of a second-grader killed when a car slammed through his elementary school's cafeteria are suing the 84-year-old driver, accusing her of negligence.

The death of 8-year-old Ryan Wesling led his parents to ask state lawmakers to keep elderly people from driving.

Now Amanda and Kevin Wesling have sued Grace Keim over the Jan. 28 crash, in which Keim drove her car up a dead-end drive at the school and never stopped, crashing through the school cafeteria at lunchtime.

Ryan died at a hospital about an hour later. Two other students were injured but recovered.

Keim has not been charged. A message left for her Tuesday was not immediately returned.

Illinois has some of the United States' toughest restrictions on older drivers, requiring a road test for license renewals after age 75. Illinois also is among at least 15 states that require renewals that include a road test every two years from age 81 to 86, and annually after that.

Keim's license had been up for renewal March 3, her 85th birthday, and her driving record shows no citations, according to state records.
