Twenty three Tamil Tiger rebels were killed by Sri Lankan soldiers in eastern Sri Lanka, the military said on Wednesday.
The battle erupted Tuesday while the soldiers were on an operation in Unnichchai village in the Batticaloa district, military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said.
The military recovered 10 bodies and was making preparations to hand them over to the rebels through the International Committee of the Red Cross, Samarasinghe said.
Rebel officials could not be reached for comment.
