In the city of Jelalabad, the administrative center of the Eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar, across the mountain pass Torkham linked by a motorway with the main city of Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province, Peshawar, the American military when arresting a brigade commander, General Ismatulla, shot dead four of his guards, and wounded several more, reported Pakistan's state radio.
What caused the arrest is as yet unknown. It was only reported that on the day before Ismatulla had arrived in Jelalabad to attend a conference of the military commanders of government troop units in the provinces of Konar, Laghman and Nangarhar, which are grouped within one army corps headquarters in Jelalabad.
The shooting erupted over certain "differences or argument" and took place not far from the city university. Aga Jan, the press-secretary of Hazrat Ali, commander of the army corps deployed in the Nangarhar Province, confirmed the fact of arrest of the general and the death of four soldiers.
