There were 407 terrorist acts in Russia in 2002, which is 68 more than in 2001, said Deputy Prosecutor General Vladimir Kolesnikov at a State Duma round table on the problem of legislation in the struggle with terrorism. Kolesnikov said of those, 360 terrorist acts were located in Chechnya. As a result of those terrorist acts, 780 servicemen died and 1525 people were injured. In 2001, as a result of terrorist acts in Chechnya 821 servicemen died and 2537 people were injured. 25 different criminal proceedings were instituted as a result of terrorist acts, said Kolesnikov.
He also said that in 2002 there were 1997 special forces operations instigated in Chechnya by police forces and armed forces. As a result of these operations, approximately 2300 bases, warehouses and hiding places with weapons were liquidated.
