The disbanded pro-Russian volunteer brigade Espanola, which previously fought on Russia's side in Ukraine, announced on December 19 the death of its founder and leader Stanislav Orlov, also known by the call sign Spaniard.
"We cannot ignore that many are interested in the reasons behind Spaniard's death, and we are no less concerned. At present, central investigative bodies are establishing the exact cause and location of his death, as well as those responsible. Official information will be published following the investigation.”
In the days preceding the announcement, contradictory information circulated regarding the fate of the 44-year-old Orlov. The Tsargrad television channel reported that he had allegedly been detained on suspicion of arms trafficking. Later, a source cited by RTVI claimed that Orlov had been killed while resisting arrest.
A message about Orlov's death was also posted by animal trainer Edgard Zapashny, though the post was subsequently deleted, further fueling speculation.
According to ASTRA, citing eyewitnesses and surveillance camera footage, Stanislav Orlov was shot dead at his country house in Sevastopol. Reports state that four vehicles arrived at the property, from which masked men armed with automatic weapons emerged.
"Neighbors heard several gunshots. Witnesses told ASTRA that Orlov did not return fire.”
Emergency services reportedly arrived only six hours later. At 18:36, an ambulance reached the house, and by 18:45 Orlov's body was removed. Law enforcement officers remained at the scene to conduct a search.
Sources cited by ASTRA, including former members of Espanola, claim that the attempted detention may have been linked to suspicions of illegal arms trafficking and alleged involvement in organized crime.
The outlet described the incident as one of the most high-profile killings within pro-war circles in recent months.
Stanislav Orlov was a supporter of football club CSKA Moscow and a member of the fan group Red-Blue Warriors. He had been involved in fighting in Donbas since 2014.
The volunteer brigade Espanola was formed in 2022 and was composed largely of football fans. In October of this year, the group announced its dissolution.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming the circumstances of Orlov's death.
