Despite medical efforts, Sarvarov later died from his injuries. He reportedly suffered multiple shrapnel wounds, severe leg injuries, a facial bone fracture, and concussion.
Fanil Sarvarov served in combat operations in the North Caucasus between 1992 and 2003 and later participated in Russia's military campaign in Syria in 2015-2016. He was a graduate of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and had passed through all key command positions during his career.
His death was officially confirmed by Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for the Investigative Committee of Russia.
"As a result of the injuries sustained, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Directorate of Operational Training of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, has died.”
Preliminary findings suggest that the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device. Investigators believe the device may have been planted under the vehicle, a Kia Sorento, with the blast originating from the front section of the car.
The explosion damaged at least seven nearby parked vehicles, indicating a significant blast force. Experts are currently working to determine the exact composition and triggering mechanism of the explosive.
According to investigative sources, the primary version being considered links the attack to Ukrainian intelligence services. A criminal case has been opened, and operational services continue to work at the scene.
The incident follows a series of recent vehicle explosions in Moscow. Earlier this month, another car blast occurred near a residential complex in New Moscow, reportedly involving a specialist in quantum electronics.
