A monument to Korea's independence movement leader Lee Song Sol was unveiled Thursday in Ussuriisk, the Primorye Territory. Lee Song Sol announced a declaration on Korea's independence in the early 20th century. The monument's construction was financed by donations of Russian Koreans, Independence Association of Korea, Science-Cultural Foundation of Korea under the aegis of the Ussuriisk administration. The Japanese authorities sentenced Lee Song Sol to death in his absence for fight against Japanese colonialism. Lee Song Sol emigrated to Russia and lived in Nikolsk-Ussuriisk until he died at the age of 48. After Lee Song Sol was cremated, his ash was scattered over the Razdolnaya river in the Ussuriisk city, as his will had it.
