On October 2, a spokesperson for the Democratic Front for Palestine Liberation called upon Arab and Muslim states to recall their ambassadors from Washington in remonstrance to the Congress’ approval of the Law on Jerusalem. Khaled Taisir, member of the Front’s political bureau said this would make the US President and the Bush administration understand that Arabs and Muslims protested against the decision to recognize Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

Besides, the Palestinian representative says the decision of the US Congress is an evidence of increasing aggression of the USA toward Palestinians and other Arab and Muslim states as well. It was especially stressed that the Congress demonstrated disrespect of the USA for the international law. However, these are mostly emotions only which are in the wrong place in a big-scale politics. If we view the situation reasonably, we can see rather interesting details connected with the law on Jerusalem.

US’s Jewish lobby is exerting great influence upon American economy and politics. What is more, every single decision passed concerning the Middle East should necessarily meet its approval.  It has been a cherished dream of  the Jewry of the whole world to make the eternal city of Jerusalem the capital of Israel. The problem was submitted to the Congress for consideration several times already, but always failed. This time the situation has radically changed: the Bush administration urgently wanted the Congress to approve the US’s military operation in Iraq, because there is little hope that the USA can get a carte blanche for overthrowing Hussein from the UN Security Council. And it became a nice opportunity for democrats to bargain: it turned out that their protests against war in Iraq had always been just a bidding up. This time they were a success: yesterday the Congress approved use of force against Iraq. It was a deal: Jerusalem in exchange for Iraq. As for the discontent of the Arab world, it is to calm down soon, as the passed decision is a sure fact already.
