The one-day meeting of the so-called Proliferation Security Initiative comes three years after U.S. President George W. Bush launched the drive to prevent the distribution of such weapons and their potential components to and by terrorist groups and countries that cause concern.
Joseph said that, since the initiative started, the international cooperation it has fostered has led to "a good number of interdictions" of dangerous weapons or their precursor materials, although many are not discussed publicly to protect sensitive intelligence, according to the AP.
He said the greatest success so far was the 2003 interception of the German-registered freighter "BBC China," which was carrying centrifuge parts to Libya for its now-defunct nuclear program, the AP reports.
