Chaika succeeds Vladimir Ustinov, whose dismissal was approved by the Federation Council earlier this month. Putin said last week that Ustinov, who had served on the job since 1999, would soon be given another official job.
Chaika, who had served as justice minister since 1999, promised lawmakers to take strong efforts to combat corruption among prosecutors and prevent them from taking sides in business conflicts, the AP reports.
