New York Governor George Pataki signed a law on Friday that will honor the woman credited with writing the speech that launched the women's suffrage movement in 1848.

New York governor signs law to create Elizabeth Cady Stanton Day

Elizabeth Cady Stanton Day will be Nov. 12 in New York beginning this year. The day is one of commemoration, not a state holiday during which offices would close.

Stanton's speech was modeled on the Declaration of Independence and is called The Declaration of Sentiments, signed by 68 women and 32 men at the historic women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York. The speech is considered the founding document of the suffrage movement and led to allowing women to vote nationwide in 1920.

"Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a trailblazer in so many ways, and the rights and liberties women take for granted today were secured by her tireless advocacy," said the bill's co-sponsor, Democratic Assemblywoman Joan Christensen of Syracus, reports AP.
