Russian President Vladimir Putin and PRC Chairman Jiang Zemin underscored the necessity of raising the role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in combatting terrorism, extremism and national separatism. During their meeting on Saturday in the context of the APEC summit in Shanghai, the leaders of the two states pointed out that the Chechen terrorists and the separatists from the Eastern Turkestan Organisation are part of global terrorism, therefore their activity must be stopped. The Russian President and the PRC Chairman emphasised the great importance of the agreement on cooperation in combatting terrorism, separatism and extremism which was signed in July this year at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. The agreement creates a legal basis for a fight against this evil. In connection with this, Vladimir Putin and Jiang Zemin spoke in favour of taking additional measures which would increase the role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in combatting terrorism.
