The Khanabad air field located 10 kilometres from Karsha, the centre of the Kashka-Darya region, is practically ready to accept US planes and helicopters at any time of the day, an Uzbek Defence Ministry spokesman reported saying that the republic's officials had opened the air field for humanitarian aid and rescue operations. According to the Defence Ministry spokesman, US and Uzbek experts are finishing the installation of the necessary navigation equipment in the air filed and as early as on Friday two military cargo planes will land there with a $320 million worth humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan. The Uzbek president's statement published last Saturday expresses the country's principled position on the inadmissibility of bombing operations from Uzbek territory. The Uzbek president also prohibits running ground combat operations against Afghanistan from Uzbek territory.
