Israeli foreign minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated at a press conference in the wake of the negotiations with Russian foreign minister Igor Ivanov that, in his opinion, "there existed many forms to settle the Palestinian problem." According to Netanyahu, one of the major criteria of solution of the problem of the Palestinian National Authority was, first of all, the necessity " to put an end to violence and terror." Netanyahu stressed that the said principle had to become an evident prerequisite for Palestinian leadership. In addition to that the Palestinian leadership, in the opinion of Netanyahu, should ensure dissemination of that understanding in the Palestinian society.
Netanyahu described "change of attitude of the Palestinian leadership to goals" as another condition for settlement of this problem. In particular, in the opinion of the Israeli foreign minister, the Palestinian leadership had to give up destruction of the Israeli state. Among other factors Netanyahu also mentioned the necessity to carry out reforms in the Palestinian society, them being, in his opinion, "both internal and external." In addition to that the Israeli foreign minister indicated that Tel Aviv clearly intended to ensure self-government of Palestine but he stressed that at the same time they should not aim at destruction of the state of Israel.
Netanyahu added that "presently it did no matter who would resolve the Palestinian problem." He pointed out that in the 21st century it was necessary to change the approach of a state to the problem of sovereignty. In particular he mentioned that creation of two independent states with preservation of the Palestinian self-government and security of Israel should become the final objective of all present efforts.
Netanyahu also stressed that a new Palestinian leadership should replace the old one. Benjamin Netanyahu pointed out that "Palestinians were entitled to have different leadership."
