Five oil company employees kidnapped in Nigeria

42264.jpegAn oil company working in Nigeria's restive and oil-rich southern delta has said five of its employees have been kidnapped and two others wounded during an attack on an offshore oil rig.

In a statement, London-based Afren said the two wounded employees were "evacuated by helicopter to a shore-based clinic".

The company said the attack happened on a rig which recently arrived off the coast of Akwa Ibom state, The Press Association reports.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has custody of three French nationals and a Thai seized off Nigeria's coast on Sept. 21 and will release names and personal details "very shortly," Jomo Gbomo, a spokesman for the group, said in an e-mailed statement today.

The group says it's fighting for a fairer share of Nigeria's oil wealth for people from the southern delta, home to the country's oil and gas industry.

Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp., Total SA and Eni SpA operate joint ventures with the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. that pump most of the country's oil, BusinessWeek reports.
