Preliminary elections results in the twin-island Caribbean nation indicate Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her five-party People's Partnership coalition have won 29 of 41 seats in parliament, The Associated Press reports.

According to RTT News, Indian origin Kamla Persad-Bissessar is set to become the first woman Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago after her five-party People's Partnership coalition swept to power in snap elections in the archipelagic state in the southern Caribbean.

Vowing to bring unity in the nation, Persad-Bissessar said: "I am grateful for the immense support from women and women's groups across the country and to the extent that this helps to break the barriers so many competent women face."
