‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Sequel Officially in Development

Beloved 90s Romcom ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Returns After Decades

The iconic romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997) is officially getting a sequel — and fans of the genre are buzzing.

According to Variety, the script for the follow-up will be written by Celine Song, the acclaimed screenwriter behind “Past Lives” (nominated for an Oscar) and “Materialists.”

Details on the director and cast have yet to be confirmed. However, actor Dermot Mulroney, who played the male lead in the original, has recently hinted at a possible return.

A Romcom Classic

The original film, directed by P.J. Hogan, followed a food critic — played by Julia Roberts — who realizes she’s in love with her best friend (Mulroney) just as he’s about to marry another woman, portrayed by Cameron Diaz.

The film was a major box office success, grossing $127 million in North America alone, and was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards. It remains one of the most beloved romantic comedies of the 1990s.

In 2022, Variety included “My Best Friend’s Wedding” in its list of the 100 greatest movies of all time.

The sequel is expected to pick up the story of the beloved characters decades later, though no plot details have been revealed.
