By using energy saving technologies Russia's gas consumption may be cut back by 40-60bn cubic meters a year, Deputy head of a Gazprom department Insaf Saifullin said at the fifth meeting of producers and consumers of oil and gas equipment. The official was quoted as saying the cost of saving 1bn cubic meter of gas is lower by a factor of 2-2.5 than the costs of exploring new gas deposits. Saifullin was quoted as saying the economic effect from introducing energy- and resource-saving technologies at Gazprom was RUR2bn (around $62.8m) in 2002. The company is currently cooperating with defense companies in creating and introducing such technologies. As it was reported earlier, in 2002 gas output was 595bn cubic meters in Russia.
