Plumber raped and murdered women to maintain his own family

To his neighbors, the man looked like a perfect family man. But he was the one who lurked in the shadows waiting to attack young women. He raped them, killed them and took their valuables. The man admitted to attacking women to support his wife and four kids. He claims that he did not intend to rape women, he says he did it involuntarily.

The police in the city of Mariupol, southeastern Ukraine, have finally detained a person who is suspected of committing a number of robberies, rapes and murders. The suspect is referred to as a 40-year-old male resident of Mariupol. He worked as a plumber at a utility company. The suspect reportedly admitted to the hideous crimes. He is also reported to have shown repentance for his acts. According to investigators, the suspect committed his first crime in March this year. The dead body of a 20-year-old girl was found in a derelict house in that month. Forensic evidence found the girl had been raped and strangled.

The suspect pounced on the victim as she was walking back home after a training session in her gym. The girl was raped and murdered just several hundred meters away from her home, NTN reports.

The manhunt took several months to yield results. The police managed to track down and arrest the criminal only after he attacked and murdered another woman in mid July. The body of a 26-year-old woman, raped and strangled, was found near the railroad tracks. The police acted on a tip from eyewitnesses who saw the plumber in the vicinity of the track on that fateful night. The suspect was arrested one day later. The cops handcuffed him at his workplace.

Under interrogation the man admitted to murdering two women and sexually assaulting a few others. “His victims are aged from 17 and 26. The rapist committed all his crimes in close proximity to his place of employment,” said Andrei Hizanshvili, head of the city criminal police department.

According to the police, the suspect normally chose deserted locations assaulting his victims. He attacked them from behind, raped them, and then relieved the bodies of money and valuables. The suspect cited a lack of money as his main motive for the crime. “My wages were just 1,500 grivnas, it was not enough for supporting my wife and four children. I didn’t want to rape and kill them. It all happened kind of spontaneously. I just couldn’t help it when I felt my body being pressed so close against the other body,” said the suspect during one of the interrogations. His relatives and colleagues are still in a state of shock. According to them, the man seemed to be the epitome of family values. He was reportedly a good worker too.

“Such persons could project the image of self-possessed and decent individuals to their loved ones and colleagues. As a rule, their own insecurities and unfulfilled desires drive them to committing sex crimes,” said Olga Zemlyanskaya, a psychologist with the city police department.
