Third of modern children use smartphones before they walk and talk

Some toddlers can scroll down the screen, while others can even call someone, the study said. The research was conducted among 370 parents and their babies at a pediatrics clinic in the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. In the United States, toddlers learn to use smartphones and tablet computers before they even learn to work and talk, a new study said. One in seven toddlers use gadgets for at least an hour a day before they turn one year old, Pravda.Ru reports.

"We didn't expect children were using the devices from the age of 6 months. Some children were on the screen for as long as 30 minutes," says Dr. Hilda Kabali, lead author of the study, told The Washington Times.

Many US parents use mobile devices as babysitters. Many allow their babies to play with mobile media when it was time to run errands, almost three fourths did the same while they did chores. Another 65 percent used the device to "calm the child", a third used it to put the child to sleep, the study found.
