Four Americans killed in Israel car accident

Four American immigrants were killed in a head-on collision on an Israeli highway, Authorities said.

Chaim Bernstein, 54, his wife Roberta, 49, and their daughter Batsheva, 18, all of Jerusalem, were instantly killed on Sunday when their car swerved into oncoming traffic and hit another car, killing another American immigrant, Sharon Sabag, 49, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

Sabag's husband and the Bernsteins' son were injured in the accident, Rosenfeld said.

The Bernsteins came to Israel from New York 21 years ago, shortly after getting married, and Sabag immigrated from Chicago with her family as a child, according to police and media reports.

Chaim Bernstein, a computer programmer, sold educational software to schools, according to reports, and Roberta, a social worker, helped victims of Palestinian attacks through a social assistance organization called Atzum.

Roberta once coached a former client through the delivery of her baby over the phone when the woman's husband couldn't make it to the hospital, Levi Lauer, 62, the organization's founder, recalled Monday.

"Roberta had a faith that we were given the capacity to make other lives better," Lauer said.

The Bernsteins are survived by two children.

The Sabags had two other children who were not with them in the car at the time of the accident.
